Finely Carved Wooden Sculpture of Garuda and Vishnu
This sculpture features a dynamic representation of Vishnu, one of the Hindu gods, riding on the back of Garuda, with Garuda grasping a dragon-like creature with his right foot-claw and a turtle-like creature with his left foot-claw. In his upper hands, Garuda securely holds the feet of Vishnu. Vishnu is holding objects in both hands. This remarkable wood sculpture is filled with ancient religious symbolism. The detail in this carving is quite extraordinary. Unfortunately, is has a small loss from the left wing of Garuda, which can be seen in the photos. Although this could be easily restored, the loss has been accounted for in the pricing of this otherwise exceptional piece. We are not certain of the exact age of this piece, but from our research we estimate that it was carved in the early 1900s, although it could be 19th century.
Price: $195. (#1096)
