Shiva Lingam and Bronze Cobra Yoni, 16-17C
This is a very old tantric Hindu folk bronze yoni in the form of a cobra. It was created to receive a Shiva lingam. Our research suggests that it may be from the Bastar tribe. It was created with the lost wax casting method, with intricate wire work. The yoni has a very dark patina and is in fairly good condition, considering the age of this piece. There is some loss at the back, as can be seen in the photos. We are including a stone lingam from the Narmada River, which is probably about 50 years old. The two pieces together symbolically represent the active and passive dynamic tension of the universe, as well as the union of the male (linga) and the female (yoni). Together these pieces stand about 6 inches tall. The yoni stands almost 4 inches tall and weighs slightly over half a pound. The lingam is 5 inches long and weighs almost 1 1/2 pounds. We recommend using a little sticky wax to steady the lingam in the yoni.
