Jade Monkey on Lingzhi Toggle, Qing Dynasty
The quality of this unique piece is very fine. It was carved during the Qing Dynasty from exquisite Burmese Jade. This toggle features a monkey sitting on top of a large lingzhi. The artistry also includes peaches and classic Chinese designs. The use of the color variations in the execution of this carving is excellent. This piece is 5" long, 2" tall, and about 1/3 of an inch thick. Toggles were used by the Chinese in the same way that Netsukes were used by the Japanese. They were a symbol of status, and their practical application was as a counterweight to a pouch, hung from a belt-like sash, since their clothing did not have pockets. This wonderful jade carving is dated to the mid to late 1800s.
