Bronze Hand Mirror with Cranes and Bamboo
This is a fine old bronze Japanese hand mirror. We are not sure of the exact age, but have seen similar pieces that are from the late 1800s to early 1900s. It is in excellent condition. It is 8.75 inches in diameter and slightly over 12 inches in length. As you can see from the photos, this mirror has a lovely scene with two cranes flying over a blossoming tree, as well as bamboo. The signature is clearly visible on the left side of the scene. The mirror side is exceptionally smooth and reflective. The decorations on the reverse side of these types of bronze mirrors first began to appear during the 11th - 12th century and included birds, trees, and flowering plants. These types of mirrors are called wakyo, indicating a Japanese style of mirror. Some historians believe that they may have been influenced by art from the Song dynasty in China. The beautiful motif on this mirror that we are offering for sale is an excellent example of the delightful and meaningful symbolic use of cranes, flowering trees, and bamboo that were used in the wakyo.
