Ancient Jade Carving of a Mythical Beast, Han Dynasty

A very unusual ancient jade carving dated to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220).  This piece is in very good condition - museum quality.  We have not been able to positively identify the particular creature represented in this carving.  It has a dragon-like appearance, but we are not certain of its significance in the culture of that period, which indicates the unique and rare quality of this piece.  It is carved from a remarkably beautiful translucent reddish tan nephrite jade.  It has a hole at one end, suggesting that it may have been used as a toggle.  We have been fortunate in being able to export items of this quality out of China through special arrangements, and are able to offer them at prices well below market value.
