Bronze Quan Yin on Foo Lion, Signed
This is a magnificent statue of Kannon Bosatsu aka Quan Yin, "Goddess of Mercy & Compassion" shown seated on a Foo Lion. She is the celestial Bodhisattva of Compassion, savior of those in distress, and the protector of children. On top of her crown is a miniature image of Amitabha Buddha. The mythological creature that she sits upon is known as Shishi (or Jishi) is translated as "lion" but is also identified as a Foo-Lion, Keiloon or Hou. These mythological animals are part lion and part dragon and are commonly found guarding the entrances of Buddhist temples as well as homes to scare off demons, and neutralize harmful elements from entering. They are an ancient symbol for high spirituality, wisdom, strength, and divine powers of transformation. This signed sculpture was purchased at an antique market in Fujisawa, Japan. The dealer indicated that it is made of bronze and it appears to be bronze made with the lost wax method. It is approximately 10" in height and 8 1/2" from the Foo Lion's ear to its tail. It weights a little over 5 pounds.
